Faculty Development Workshops
This Program provides faculty with the opportunity to coordinate and/or participate in four types of Workshops: I. Curricular Workshops are expected to focus primarily on introductory and intermediate levels of the curriculum. Examples of appropriate topics include but are not limited to: investigative laboratories in introductory biology, curricular applications of plant physiology, or models of calculus curricula and their integration into introductory science courses. Curricular workshops are required to produce a set of written materials--new laboratory modules, lab manuals, model curricula or syllabi reflecting the considerations and recommendations of the participants.II. Technology Workshops are intended to convey information about new areas of science and applications of contemporary techniques to research and teaching. Topics in this category could include the use of computer parallel processing, macromolecular computer modelling, new laser technologies and applications of nmr. III. Field Workshops are to provide an opportunity for faculty in the areas of geology, ecology, and environmental science to visit various sites in the Consortium to share experiences in conducting research and teaching at field stations or in particular habitats of interest. IV. Career Development Workshops will bring new faculty, graduate students and postdocs to meet experienced faculty. The workshops will provide a forum to discuss issues relating to the transition from graduate school to faculty positions. Each Workshop should be scheduled for 2-3 days and include about 15 participants. Topics of workshops are approved on the basis of their usefulness to a significant number of faculty throughout the Consortium, as determined by a poll of Pew Institutional Representatives. Workshop Proposal: Workshop proposals are to be prepared by the potential workshop coordinator(s) working with the Pew Director and local Pew Representative. Proposals should contain all necessary details including: Title Coordinator Abstract Site Dates General description of workshop subject Need for workshop Workshop schedule Expected outcomes of workshop Deadline for applications from faculty interested in attending Budget: (Maximum per workshop is $15,000)
Workshops funds may be requested to defray printing and distribution of the workshop products which might include books, software, lab protocols, videotapes or the like. Submit a tentative budget for prior approval of all expenses. The amounts indicated above may be adjusted to accommodate the specific situation. However, total expenses for the entire workshop should be approxiamately $15,000 for 15-20 participants. . Workshop Coordinator: Responsibilities for all of the organizational details associated with workshops held at your institution can be discussed and divided amoung the workshop coordinator(s) and the Program Office. Alternatively, if you prefer for us to handle the logistics of meals, travel, and lodging, we can host the workshop for you on the Hope College campus. In this case, you would still be responsible for arranging speakers and the program. Details associated with the workshop include:
Following the Workshop: Evaluation forms and travel reimbursement forms from each participant must be sent to the Pew Program Assistant within one month following the Workshop. A final report describing the activities and outcome of the Workshop must be sent to the Pew Director within one month following the Workshop.
