Pew Short Term Consultations Guidelines

The purpose of the Short Term Consultation (STC) is to encourage and support collaborations involving either two individuals, a small group, or two departments. Projects might involve sharing information, instrumentation and facilities or expertise among the faculty members of the Consortium.

The STC grants funds for faculty in a particular area to visit a member campus to:

* present a seminar,
* participate as an outside examiner in a senior thesis exam,
* demonstrate a laboratory technique suitable to an undergraduate laboratory, or
* advise on equipment purchases or curriculum changes.

The STC also allows faculty to visit another Consortium institution with highly sophisticated research equipment to:

* have a sample tested,
* learn a new technique, or
* visit a field station or library.

In addition, this STC will support follow-up visits for faculty members participating in the Faculty Workshops supported by the Pew Midstates Consortium.

The Pew Short Term Consultation Program (STC) will fund an average of three visits per year per institution, including travel, hotel and meal expenses for no more than three days, and host expenses. Host expenses may include refreshments, supplies, meals with faculty and students, facilities use fee for use of advanced instrumentation, and for specimen or sample analysis at Washington University or the University of Chicago. Funding for the purchase of equipment is not included in this program.

To identify potential collaborators, see Institutional Departmental web pages, or Speaker Series data base. Prior agreement of the person providing the resource must be obtained.

Application Procedure

Submit the on-line application form to the Director, Janet Andersen. There are no set deadlines. The Director will decide the awards for less than $1,000 and communicate the results to the applicant within one week of receiving the application. Proposals for $1,000 to $7,000 will be reviewed by the Executive Committee.

Evaluation

The award recipient must submit a brief report summarizing the utility of the award in furthering the progress of her/his curricular or research project to the Pew Director within one month following the award. The report should specifically mention any collaborative outcomes resulting from the new contacts.

Application for Short-Term Consultations

The Pew Midstates Science and Mathematics Consortium consists of 11 liberal arts colleges and 2 research universities. The Consortium seeks to promote effective collaboration among faculty at the member institutions; to improve undergraduate science and mathematics education; and to assist with the research efforts of the faculty at the undergraduate colleges and of the undergraduate students at all of the member institutions.

The Consortium coordinates activities including symposia on undergraduate research, faculty development workshops, and a speaker series through which individual faculty members visit other member schools to share information.
