Final Report

57 participants, including two from a non-Pew institution, attended the conference held March 7-9, 2003, at the DoubleTree Guest Suites in Glenview, IL. The conference began Friday evening with dinner and keynote speaker Dr. Elaine Seymour presenting her research findings on why undergraduates leave the sciences. Saturday's sessions included Doug Arion, Carthage College, ScienceWorks: The Entrepreneurial Studies in Natural Science Program, Elaine Marzluff, Grinnell College, Welcoming the Underrepresented into the Scientific Community: Grinnell's New Science Project, Stuart Allison, Knox College, Using a Field Station to Enhance Science Education: Lessons from Green Oaks, and Matt Richey with Paul Zorn, Building a Major: It's More than the Discipline. Following a lunch buffet, Elaine concluded with what she has found since co-authoring her book. Ken Yasukawa and Laura Parmentier, Beloit College, Active Learning in Introductory and Intermediate Biology and Chemistry Courses, Karen Nordell, Lawrence University, Engaging Students in Science Using Topics in Nanotechnology, and David Bressoud , Macalester College, Mathematics in the Community of Sciences were the presenters in the afternoon. Early that Saturday evening five posters were presented in the beautiful atrium with cocktails. Sunday morning began with Jose Quintans, University of Chicago, Bio Labs for the 21st Century, then Regina Stevens-Truss and Joan M. Esson, Kalamazoo College, Incorporating Service Learning Into the Major and Jim Gentile, Hope College, ended the conference with an interactive discussion on The Integration of Space in Science Buildings. Questions and comments were permitted at the end of each session.

The evaluations and informal comments made it clear that participants found the workshop valuable. Of particular value was the opportunity to meet and talk with other faculty from the different institutions and various disciplines.
